When I saw this book, I thought it would be a good introductory text for one of my daughters who at the time had expressed an interest in learning to read Egyptian Hieroglyphs. I purchased it to see how useful a text it would be for her (I had no need to make use of it for myself, however). While she never went on to pursue the language (though she has informed me in no uncertain terms that she wants all my Egyptian books when I die!), I enjoyed reading through the text. I wish this book had been written 30 years ago. It is an excellent step-by-step guide to learning enough to read monuments for one's self. One definitely should proceed further, however, after completing this guide to the basics sans technical jargon. There is a good amount of memorization still involved, but it is far easier than most all other texts I ever have read, and it is mostly up-to-date. I loved this most about the book.There, however, is a rather serious error (in the edition of the text I read) that shows up on pages 70-74. Errors in drawing and in transcription caused the formulation of an entire argument that was unnecessary. If one takes a closer look at the photo of the original on page 68, one can see the 't' character that the person who drew the illustration missed, that by being missing transforms "his daughter" into "his son." I, at the time, contacted the author about this situation but I do not know whether the error has been corrected or not. So, I provide those corrections here for those who might still see the text as it was at the time I purchased the book.On page 70, insert the 't' "cake" or "loaf" character between the "goose" and "asp" characters on the line designated by the number three.On page 72, the phrase "It is his son who has kept his name alive" should be "It is his daughter who has kept his name alive." The relevant part of the transcription above the English should be sꜢt.f sꜥnḫ rn.f tꜢ.On page 73, draw the 't' character again, near the head but between the "goose" and the "asp," or directly above the "asp." On the same line, add a 't' to the transliteration and change sꜢ.f to sꜢt.f. After that, on the same third line substitute "daughter" for "son" and add an 's' to he and make it "she." On the same page, on the fifth line, change "he" to "she." On the sixth line of the same page, add "or daughter" above the line with a carat, and add "/her" to "his" at the end of the line. Do the same with the eighth line and add "or her" to the ninth line of the same page.Ignore the argumentation on the latter half of page 73 regarding "Ameny" being a "son" in the writing (it most certainly isn't here in the original inscription but is mistakenly so in the drawing of the inscription).On page 74, again add the Egyptian 't' character in the first line of the Egyptian characters, between the goose's feet and the asp character below the goose. On the same page, cross out "son" and substitute "daughter" in the second line, or disregard the argument entirely since it is irrelevant to the inscription. On the 4th line of English text (skipping the caption text of the drawing), change "son" to "daughter," and on the 7th and 14th lines of the same page, do the same.All of these corrections will make the book more consistent both with itself and with the original inscription.I hated that error the most but don't let that glaring error dissuade you from purchasing this book! It was well worth the purchase price and now is part of my collection because of the very useful information which it contains.

This is a great introductory book with a novel approach to teaching an ancient and beautiful language.The typical hieroglyph teaching books usually saddle the learner with tedious grammar rules that take the fun out of learning. No doubt, these formal books are necessary after a certain point - when one needs to move on to further formal study.Bill Manley's approach is different. He teaches hieroglyphs in much the same way that we all learned our native languages by recognizing patterns and sounds to make sense of conveyed meaning. From the first lesson, you will be reading stela inscriptions from the 2200 BC tomb of Mereri. It's a fresh approach that can yield results quickly as you go through museum exhibits.Don't expect the learning to be easy, however. You still have to memorize many details and practice and work hard to attain competency in reading monuments. The book facilitates this with short lessons and frequent prompts for exercises.

You won't be reading The Book of Going Forth by Day based on this but it gives a great into to the language and to the standard formulæ you're likely to see on stelæ, coffins, and similar artifacts. How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs by Manley and Mark Collier is a much more in-depth book but for an introduction to the language used on ancient monuments and artifacts this is most excellent.There is one minor errata on page 97. The numbers for feet and meters are reversed.

Despite being for beginners this is still fairly hard work. If, however, you are even mildly frustrated at not being able to read Hieroglyphics and want to learn, this book is a 'must'! This book, and the exercises contained within requires effort on behalf of the reader. Don't be discouraged it's worth it !

About the Author
Nancey Green Leigh is a Professor and PhD Program Director in the School of City and Regional Planning Program at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She is a Fellow of the American lnstitute of Certified Planners and Co-Editor of the Journal of Planning Education and Research. Leigh teaches, conducts research, and publishes in the areas of local economic development planning, urban and regional development, brownfield redevelopment, and sustainable urban industrial systems.She is the author of Stemming Middle Class Decline: The Challenge to Economic Development Planning, and coauthor (with Joan Fitzgerald) of Economic Revitalization: Cases and Strategies for City and Suburb. Some of the journals she has published in are Economic Development Quarterly, Journal of Planning Education and Research, Journal of the American Planning Association, Journal of Industrial Ecology, International Regional Science Review, Journal of Resource Conservation and Recycling, Growth and Change, Journal of Urban Technology, IEDC Economic Development Journal, and the Journal of Planning Literature. She obtained her B.A. in urban studies and a master's in regional planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a master's in economics and a Ph.D. in city and regional planning from the University of California at Berkeley. She is a former Woodrow Wilson Fellow and Regents Fellow of the University of California at Berkeley and past Vice President of the Association of The Collegiate Schools of Planning.

Dr. Edward J. Blakely is Professor of Urban Policy in the United States Study Centre at the University of Sydney, Australia. He has held academic positions in teaching, research, academic administration, and economic development policy for more than 30 years, including Dean of the Robert J. Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy and Dean of the University of Southern California School of Policy, Planning, and Development. He is a leading scholar and practitioner in the fields of planning and local economic development. Dr. Blakely served as a policy adviser to the mayor of Oakland and adviser to the Los Angeles Public School District. He was appointed by President Clinton as Vice Chair of the Presidio Trust, where he played a key role in the development of the former army base into a profitable civic facility. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Planning Association, the Nature Conservancy, and Fulbright Association. In January 2007, Dr. Blakely was appointed by the Mayor of New Orleans to head the recovery effort following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Autobiography is bizarre, abstruse ("a word which here means 'cryptic'"), and truly entertaining. Would you expect anything less from the mystery man behind A Series of Unfortunate Events (The Bad Beginning, The Ersatz Elevator, etc.)? Virtually every detail of the volume has Snicket's indelible mark, from the book jacket (reversible to help readers disguise this "extremely dangerous" and "objectionable" autobiography) to the copyright page text to the intentionally blurry and bewildering black-and-white photographs appearing throughout. An apparently false obituary for Lemony Snicket sets the stage for what turns into a series of mind-boggling bundles of coded information passed from hand to hand, gleaned from newspapers blowing through streets, pages from a journal addressed to "Dear Dairy," blueprints of ships, minutes from secret meetings, and a lot of edited and disputed commentary. The question is, do we finally discover the meaning of VFD? You know you're not going to get a straight answer. But any fan of Snicket will have a lot of fun trying. A certain maniacal glee went into the creation of this archly humorous volume. Beginning with the suggestion on the front flap of the dust jacket to disguise its dangerous contents (Make use of this book's reversible jacket immediately), readers will know they're in possession of something deliciously left of normal. The jacket reverses to display a hilarious parody of Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events covers, entitled The Pony Party! and featuring The Luckiest Kids in the World! by Loney M. Setnick. Meanwhile, the contents lead readers on a merry goose chase. The 13 (naturally) chapters burst with red herrings, non sequiturs, mysterious letters, diary entries and so on not to mention fading black-and-white photographs with captions such as Total strangers and W?H?O? The narrative makes for a most satisfying tease, larded with such Snicketisms as For various reasons, portions of this chapter have been changed or made up entirely, including this sentence. It would seem that Snicket's obituary from the highly unreliable Daily Punctilio (which is reproduced in the book) is premature, and that there will indeed be more installments about the Baudelaires, though nothing is certain in the end and readers are left nearly as in the dark about Snicket as they were at the start. Of course, this is all part of the fun, guaranteed to make the author's fans itch to get their hands on a copy of this devious romp masquerading as an autobiography. Ages 10-up.

Grade 4-8 Beneath a simple, seductive Tyvek cover resembling manila and plain brown paper, snippets of Snicket's life appear in 13 chapters of notes, letters, newspaper clippings, songs, photos, telegrams, screenplay excerpts, steamship tickets, and meeting minutes. Daniel Handler prefaces the material. It is not stated who compiled this information, although there is a speculative tale of how it reached the publisher. Snicket begins with a letter about the inaccurate report of his death published in The Daily Punctilio and comments on a folk song detailing his abduction at a young age by the V.F.D. It is noted that all members of this organization were snatched at an early age, chronicled with black-and-white photographs. Subsequent documents from and about characters in "A Series of Unfortunate Events," such as Poe, Olaf, Esme, and others, may or may not reveal their connection to V.F.D., which is used as an acronym for many different organizations, events, and things. Allusion is made to a solid connection between the Snickets and Baudelaires; clearly they are in imminent danger and in need of the many disguise suggestions provided. The book's high-gloss pages have the look of a scrapbook with many gray pages reminiscent of early photocopies. References are made to Kafka, Fitzgerald, and children's authors.
