Wasn't thrilled with this book. It's a series of interviews with different gay men in Hollywood. Some are more interesting than others. Cary Grant without a script, seems to have been quite cagey and boring. Randolph Scott, interviewed late in life, seems to have a what-the-hell attitude when he exclaims "Cary Grant is all that and more!" The most touching of all the interviews was Richard Deacon (Mel on "The Dick Van Dyke Show') he talks about what it's like to be labeled as "supporting" and how at his level neither his personal life, nor the personal lives of his characters, are of much interest to the audience. It's not a full chapter but a part of the Liberace chapter which is a total snooze.
When you're in the mood for something of a sensation nature, this is your book. Boy, is Hollywood different from its image.
Specifically enjoyed the question/answer interviews. Especially interested in the culture of being closeted back "in the day" and how that culture continues.
Easy read and excellent insight into how old Hollywood dealt with inclusion and exclusion of gay actors.
love all of the interviews with the stars...in their own words
Still reading it, but so far it is better than some other similar books like the one written by Gore Vidal's friend. That book is full of grammatical errors.
I think some reviewers here are having a tough time coming to terms with alternative sexual orientations. I bought this book for my son and he loved it. While he questioned the credibility of the author at times, he still enjoyed reading the background on some of Hollywood's notorious flamers.
