I am a huge fan of Liz Ryan. I have used her job-hunting techniques for years, and am a twitter follower and regular reader of her very intelligently written Forbes columns. This book seems so dumbed-down to me that it is hard to believe that the same person wrote this book and the Forbes columns. Did an editor push Liz to change her style to appeal to a more general readership? Here's the example (at about 10% in) that really made it painful for me to go on reading:"Keith is in reinvention. He feels like he's on an 'emotional see-saw'. What did Keith mean when he said that he feels like he's on an emotional see-saw? He meant that his emotions go up and down."To be clear: I highly recommend Liz's ideas and methods. If you aren't familiar with them, I recommend that you get familiar by reading her Forbes articles. I was hoping for a well-written book that would collect all of her ideas in one place; I'm not even a fussy reader, but I was disappointed by the level at which this book is written.I hope that this book will go to a second edition as quickly as possible, and tighten up the writing. The world needs the book that this one should have been.

I bought this book on a whim after reading a few impressive columns on LinkedIn. While the book makes some very salient points on modern day career building, it's a bit of trudge through flowery language to get to them. There are too many anecdotes and distracting stories telling the reader how important it is to turn the page. The Mojo journal writing exercise is a good idea, but the suggestions to write come too often and also interrupt the flow. I appreciate the cheerleading and effort to enable transformation, but I didn't feel like I was getting down to business until halfway through the book.I would love to see a revised edition that tightened the writing and structured better. I also would love to know WHY the systems (ATS's, recruitment, etc) are broken and which specific companies have evolved in accordance to her advice. Not everything that is written is universally acknowledged as good advice. In the end, I set the book down having learned something and I will follow through with several of the exercises, so it's worth the discounted price. Frankly though, the author's LinkedIn posts and columns online are faster reads of the same information.

Wordy and sing songy. Liz practices her human voice method to the point, you want to stop reading and get to the point. Otherwise, there are some great lessons or reminders to pick up. Good for the middle manager who has anxiety in looking for a new role or reentering the workforce. Less for executives and skilled labor.

There's some good advice in this book, but the writing style is AWFUL! Very repetitive, and as another reviewer wrote, it's as though it's written for a 2nd grader at times! It's very different from Liz's style on LinkedIn, which is what led me to buy the book. I'm really disappointed. I disagree with her on a few points as well - I don't think that full time employment is going away in the future, I HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE human voiced resumes, and I think she oversimplifies the pain letter process. It's not always easy to identify a hiring manager to contact, and it's definitely not always possible to dream up a position to sell them on hiring. Really odd advice, IMO. I'm about 75% of the way through the book, and it's SUCH a slow read. I'm determined to finish it...........

I liked the fact that this was a different approach to the job search. In theory, the author has some great advice. In practice? Not so much. She has some good ideas about how to get around the traditional "apply online and wait" method. It's brilliant, really. Problem? It doesn't work. You can send out as many pain letters as you want, network until you are blue in the face, and call yourself a "consultant" as much as you want. It still won't make people hire you. Why? Because employers are lazy. Oh, job seekers get accused of this all the time, but it is actually the employer who is lazy. I can't even get an employer to talk to me at a JOB FAIR!!! And you want them to take time out of their personal work schedule to sit down with me? Forget it! You simply get told to "go online and fill out an application." And the first time you refuse to give a current or previous salary, the interview is over. No, it's none of their business. But it's how the game is played. If you won't play, they will find someone who will. Right back where you started. Got to keep the machine wheels turning, right?

So my review is not on the content of the book. I am completely satisfied with reading it, completing the assignments and especially all of the learning about myself that I am experiencing! I give that a 5 Star rating. This 1 star review is on the book itself. I purchased this book a little under a year ago and started it about a month ago. While reading it I noticed there were a couple of pages where the printing is off. It was weird and a little challenging to get through but really didn't think about wanting to return it because I figured it's just a couple pages, I read them and it's over. However, now I am starting the second section of the book and ran into another off set page. So I start looking through the book and there are over a dozen pages like this. Of course I know that it's waaaaaaaay too late for a return. I just wanted to let Amazon know. I tried to do it through my order purchase page and that was a no go because it's so past the purchase date. Then I sent an email that included my purchase order number and the pictures below. I didn't ask for anything. I just wanted for them to see what I received. The only response I have gotten to date is: I'm sorry you are not happy with your purchase, your return/exchange rate for this product has expired. 🤨sheeeeesh

Every once in a while, you will hear a radio interview with a professional athlete that strikes a chord, even though you have only be a amateur jock yourself. When asked what he has learned over the past seasons in his particular sport, the MLB or NBA player might say something like: "I have learned to LET THE GAME COME TO ME." Is it a brand new, earth-shattering idea? No, but might really be helpful if you are trying too hard to "make something happen" during your games. With the psychological bent in America, that seems to be a easy trap for those On The Path.I get the same value from Ajahn Sumedho's books. I read for 5-10 minutes each morning before meditation just to set the tone . . . NOT to acquire new ideas . . . just to get encouragement and support. Doing 10 years of daily meditation is not like doing Billy Blanks' Tae Bo workout videos for 10 years. That change would surely be obvious!! I find the spiritual path to be less clear. Has ANYTHING changed?? Then I read a page or two, and Sumedho reminds you . . . "The goal is not to CHANGE YOURSELF . . . but become more MINDFUL of just what shows up . . .Like This . . . filtered through all your expectations and delusions . . . It is like hitting the re-set button when my computer is bogged down . . .I re-boot and feel clearer . . . I read his previous book,The Sound of Silence this way for a couple years before this title showed up in print. Same message, but it has been helpful to have some different words to allow the message to reach my . . . heart/soul/ whatever you choose to call it.I will say, as a final note that with him having been a Peace Corps Volunteer before he studied in the Thai Forests, it seems like he can understand and work with the default settings that might be in my way. Also, I like that these are TALKS spoken to retreatants not deeply, metaphysical WRITINGS that occurred while he was alone with his laptop. Something about the spoken word works for me, less academic and more relational. He and Pema Chodron have been wonderful guides for this former Midwestern altar boy who has been exploring a different spiritual path for the past decade. They both shine the light in front of you . . .so you can start to discover your own path and learn from YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES . . . as the Buddha encouraged his followers to do. Plenty of rocks to trip over in the dark and strange voices in the woods, but never boring. As Mary Oliver likes to say: "Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"

It has been my habit for the past 25 years to read a few pages of a spiritual book before sleep. As meditation practice has grown in the west the quality of the writing has become more incisive and direct. This is needed because people want to romanticize meditation as a way to enter a transcendent space beyond human suffering.Ajahn Sumedho has been informed by his life as a Buddhist monk and, perhaps even more importantly, his observations of Thai culture. He notes that Western students are idealistic, striving for perfection by subjecting themselves to harsh discipline and self criticism. Thai culture is much more accepting of human weakness. He encourages the reader to practice meditation in a very relaxed way. When we don't strive for an idealized state of enlightenment we are more likely to notice a natural nonverbal awareness that allows us to gracefully experience the full range of human emotion. This book really resonates with my personal experience. tells us we just aren't noticing it. He states the simple truth quite simply.

This is one of the best best books in Buddhism that I have read.It is simple, and Sumedho encourages intuitive awareness, which is something we can find in ourselves. He shared his experience, his observations and journey from a lay person to, novice monk, and abbot. In my opinion, the best take away in the book, is : To reach the deathless, the conditionless, nirvana, we actually do not need any conditions. People are attached to conditions (such as quietness) to have peace. But do we really need conditions to reach the conditionless? We often hear the core teaching "impermanence, suffering and no-self" and imposed them on our experience without wisdom, without understanding. Sumedho emphasizes that it should be used as a way for reflection. There are some other excellent books which I want to share in the below URL, especially the Anthology Volume 1 to 5, which is the collected teachings from Sumedho.http://forestsanghapublications.org/viewAuthor.php?id=9

This is an open door to Buddhism. Sumedhho is a gifted explainer who makes even the complicated understandable. He is concrete, specific and pragmatic and offers a view of Buddhism not as something just to read about and puzzle about but as a set of beneficial practices to bring into daily life. His focus is on the most immediate and accessible aspects of human experience. He doesn't ask the reader to have faith in texts or the experiences of historical figures or acclaimed contemporary leaders. He invites the reader to simply do these things with openness and persistence and see what happens. Less suffering? Yes or no.

The 1st time I read Ajahn Sumedho's "Don't Take your Life..." I liked it, but felt it could've/should've been edited. Two months later, I've picked it up again, and am now approaching the end of my 2nd time to read it from cover to cover: What changed? me. I could see my games better when I went back to this book. Thank goodness for Sumedho's bare-bones honesty about the workings of his own mind and thanks for his main meditation instruction: "Be with what's happening, now." (But do so kindly, without effort, etc.) The classical sutras/scriptures in Tibetan Buddhism don't address the Western mind and our low-self esteem issues (no matter if that comes out by our being highly competitively, depressed and/or everything in the middle.) That's because beating up on one's self historically wasn't part of the Tibetan's world view. Sumedho's book integrates observing yourself/your thoughts and every day life in a way you might find helpful, no matter if you're a Buddhist or not.
